At Googie Burger in the park. We got our food after listening for the announcement, "Googie customer 28 - shake it on down to the point."
The design of Googie Burger is pointed. The name Googie comes from its Googie style of architecture whose name, in turn, comes from a now-gone West Hollywood cafe named Googies. (Googie Architecture Online: http://www.spaceagecity.com/googie/)

Heading Home
We are on the Dartmouth Coach, heading for home. We arrive in Hanover at midnight. There are some tired quiz bowlers (and chaperones) here and it will feel good to sleep in our own beds. Tomorrow, we will post some more photos and perhaps a game-by-game recap from one of the players. Thanks for your support and for reading the blog.
Quick Sunday Update
The Hanover team went 1-2 in the playoff rounds on Sunday morning, being eliminated after the third round and finishing with a record of 8-5, two more wins than last year and the best showing by Hanover ever at the HSNCT.
They played a couple more consolation rounds before going to the Googie Burger in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park for lunch. We then watched an exciting final match between Bellarmine and Detroit Catholic Central, two impressive teams, before heading home. DCC came from behind to win the first game of the finals, but Bellarmine won the second game and the tournament. (Tournament Results)
We are now back in Boston eating dinner and waiting for the Dartmouth Coach. Some members of the team are practicing questions from the tournament.

A great day of quiz bowl in Atlanta. The team played very well, winning the last game in overtime. They lost two afternoon games by a mere 10 points! They played a tough schedule against top teams.
A live blogger watched the morning game against Bellarmine and wrote,
"Hanover powers at about the 5th word"

"By the way, one of Hanover's members has an awesome straw hat."
We had a nice dinner out at a Turkish restaurant, which has become a tradition. Now we are all resting up for tomorrow's competition.

The team continues to play some terrific quizbowl. A favorite moment...a bonus on the 14th state..VERMONT...as Gabe pumps his fist. They lost by just 10 points, to Lasa A, a school from Texas that brings FIVE teams to the tournament! Two more games before the end of today's play. We are now sure of play tomorrow in the play-offs, but would like to go in with the best record we can.
It's lunch time and the team record is 3-1. They have played well. The single loss was to Bellarmine, from San Jose, CA, a team favored to place high in the finals tomorrow. It was a great match and the team was within 30 points, in the second half, but was down by 60 at the end. Some beautiful power buzzes, from more than one team member.
First Round Update
Good morning, round one just finished; win over East View (MN) fairly wide margin, though we weren't at peak performance. We have a bye round now and will play another 1-0 team in round three.

In Atlanta and Scrimmaging

quiz bowlers were apparent as we rode the train from the airport to
downtown Atlanta, where hundreds more swarmed the Hyatt Regency Hotel
and surrounding area. After a dinner at Mama Ninfa's Mexican restaurant, the
team practiced during several scrimmage rounds with teams from around
the country. This picture, between scrimmages, is in the Hanover Hall wing of the hotel's
conference rooms. After breakfast on Saturday, the real rounds begin.

An Introduction
For those of you not in the know, this post will be a brief introduction to the NAQT HSNCT, the tournament the HHS team will be playing this weekend. This national tournament features the top national teams, and will be the capstone experience for many players this year.
The Game Format
Quiz bowl is an academic competition. Each game is (usually) between teams of four players. Though there are many regional variants, the national standard has become the toss-up bonus format. Teams compete for a pyramidal toss up on buzzer systems; correct answers are rewarded with 10 or 15 points, and the team to answer correctly gets a bonus in three parts, worth 10 points each. There are subtle variations, the NAQT format using timed rounds, each half in 9 minutes, (though the game will not continue if all 24 tossups area read) and early buzzes are rewarded with power point, 15 instead of 10. NAQT format notably contains far more popular culture (affectionately termed "trash"), current events, and geography than other formats this comes at the expense of fine arts, and the super-category: religion, mythology, and philosophy (RMP). The HSNCT also features computational math bonuses, and only non computational math tossups. As competitions for the top teams, national tournaments feature far harder questions than their regular season equivalents. The full distribution for the HSNCT can be found here.

Though there will be scrimmage rounds Friday night, the real tournament play takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday prelim in composed of 16 Swiss paired rounds in which each team will play ten games. Teams with a winning record (6-4 and above), will advance to Sunday's playoff. The format is double elimination, with teams at 6-4 starting in the losers bracket.
Further information can be found on the NAQT website. Additionally the Quiz bowl wiki features some information, though it's notably full of in-jokes. We will be providing updates through out the day on Saturday. Last year some of the matches were webcast using iHigh. If we find ourselves on one of the streams we'll certainly let you know about it.
